How Moringa Oleifera Reduces Chronic Fatigue and Improves Mood

We all experience daytime fatigue. To some, fatigue means trying to stay awake during that last hour of work after the caffeine crash hits. To others, fatigue is an ongoing symptom of underlying illness or disorder. No matter the cause or severity, fatigue is a potentially debilitating phenomenon that affects how we work, think, and process. Fatigue can cause issues such as poor memory, depressed mood, and irritability. Long-term, it can also cripple your social life and lead you to turn down opportunities that you just don’t have the energy to pursue.

How Moringa Oleifera Reduces Chronic Fatigue and Improves Mood

There are a wide range of illnesses that can cause chronic fatigue, including anemia, major depressive disorder, and autoimmune disorders – just to name a few. Moringa Oleifera can help increase and maintain long-term energy for people who live with chronic fatigue. It can also help people who are just simply sleep deprived from the busy nature of modern life. Here’s how.

How Moringa Oleifera Increases Energy Levels

Have you ever eaten a nutritious meal packed with vitamins and nutrients, and felt like you could run a marathon? Moringa works in a similar fashion. It contains all eight of our essential amino acids. It also contains over 40 different antioxidants, 36 anti-inflammatories, and 92 phytonutrients.

Amino Acids in Moringa

One of the most notable amino acids abundant in Moringa powder is Tryptophan. Tryptophan is used by the body to help synthesize protein. Since our bodies do not naturally produce Tryptophan, we need to get it from our diet. Tryptophan helps to produce serotonin and niacin (vitamin B3). Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation, memory, learning, and many other things. Many people who are diagnosed with major depressive disorder have low serotonin levels. B vitamins help sustain long-term energy, decrease the risk of stroke, and assure healthy metabolic processes.

Since Moringa Oleifera is abundant in the amino acid tryptophan, it in turn provides the benefits of that come with increased serotonin and vitamin B3.

Other Nutrients in Moringa Associated with Improved Energy and Mental Health

Moringa powder does not only contain vitamin B3: it also contains vitamins B1, B2, and B6. Vitamin B6 is particularly known for its benefit on energy and mood, because it helps the body synthesize serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. B6 deficiency has been shown throughout many reputable scientific studies to be linked to depression, chronic fatigue, and other mood disorders. Moringa Oleifera will help you maintain a healthy level of this important vitamin.

Did you know moringa is often prescribed around the world for anemia? (Estrella et al., 2000; Siddhuraju and Becker, 2003). The iron content contained within the plant is particularly high for a plant-based source. This means that not only is moringa great for those who suffer from anemia and iron deficiency, but it’s a great iron supplement for vegetarians as well.

Then there’s the 42 different antioxidants that moringa touts. While “antioxidant” is sometimes used as a buzzword, the benefits of antioxidants are nevertheless thoroughly demonstrated to save the body from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants. To put it simply, free radicals are reactive compounds that can potentially damage fatty tissue and DNA over time. While oxidative stress is normal to an extent, we experience increased amounts of it when exposed to air pollution or an improper diet. This can quicken the development of diseases like diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer. By eating a diet rich in antioxidants, we can slow down the development of these diseases and even - for some - prevent them entirely.

But…Where’s the Proof?

So, we know that moringa contains a lot of nutrients that are associated with mood regulation and energy production. But are there actually studies that prove moringa is worth all the hype? In fact, there are. Studies have been conducted on moringa since the 70’s, and they’ve verified a lot of the benefits that users have believed in since ancient times. One of the most breakthrough studies on Moringa Oleifera, conducted in 2015, concluded that rats who had been administered moringa extract were able to swim longer without becoming exhausted than rats who hadn’t been administered moringa. The study also found that moringa decreased the rats’ blood levels of triglycerides.

Why not just eat a healthy diet?

It’s true that many of the nutrients in moringa can be found in other places, and you may already get ample amounts of them simply from having a healthy diet. However, it’s difficult to keep track of exactly which foods contain which vitamins, amino acids, or phytonutrients - and what quantity they may contain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually have the time to sift through the produce section and evaluate which of the fruits and vegetables contain each of the hundreds of things our body needs to function optimally. I know that oranges are high in vitamin C – is that good enough?

contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, greater iron than spinach, and more potassium than bananas (Fahley, 2005)

The reason Moringa Oleifera is so great for your health is because it offers everything a plant-based energy supplement should have in one place. Rather than taking 5 different vitamins a day, you can quickly get your daily fill from moringa. It contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, greater iron than spinach, and more potassium than bananas (Fahley, 2005).

Why not just drink coffee or an energy drink?

Coffee can be good in moderation, but its stimulant effect can be a catch-22. It gives a temporary sense of alertness, but it often wears off by the end of the day – leaving you tired and irritable. For some people, high amounts of caffeine produce an unpleasant jittery feeling and a heightened heart rate. The same side effects are produced by amphetamines, as well. While stimulants are a temporary fix, they don’t treat the underlying problem.

Moringa Oleifera is a great thing to use in addition to your morning coffee or even as a replacement. Rather than producing a sudden, short-lived sense of energy, it creates more of a gradually-building, long-term alertness. It also doesn’t interfere with your sleep like caffeine is known to do. In fact, since it helps the synthetization of neurotransmitters, it helps you get a great night’s sleep.
